The Importance of Spring Swim Lessons Posted:January 22, 2012
The Spring swimming schedule at Sea Star began January 3rd. We would like to stress the importance of Spring swimming lessons to everyone in our community because at Sea Star, safety is our number one concern. In Texas, drowning is the number one preventable death of children under the age of 5. With the growing number of neighborhood and personal swimming pools in the area as well as the abundance of lakes and our proximity to Galveston beach, it is hard to keep our children away from large bodies of water. Although a child can never be considered “drown proof,” there are many things parents can do to drastically reduce the probability of their children being in a water related accident this summer. If a child ever turns up missing, the first place to ALWAYS check is any nearby bodies of water including neighbors pools and/or ponds. Also, parents should never leave a child unattended in a swimming pool even for a short time. Another precaution parents can take is enrolling their children in swim lessons at Sea Star Swimschool. Aside from being a fun extracurricular activity, swim lessons enable children to develop respect for the water as well as teaching children valuable safety skills that could aid them in an emergency. Older children learn proper swimming technique as well as develop endurance that will help them avoid fatigue during their pool playtime in the summer. Unfortunately, too many people wait until summer to enroll in swimming lessons. The average child needs 4 - 5 months of lessons before they show strong swimming traits. Beginning lessons in May or June does not afford your child the time necessary to be ready for the outdoor swimming season in Houston. If you enroll your child at Sea Star early in the year, you will reap the benefits by the time summer comes around, when your child is able to enjoy summer swim parties, going to friend’s home pools, and relaxing at your neighborhood pool. You can also be excited knowing that your child is developing a skill he can use for the rest of his life.
